The summer months usher in vacationers fleeing the suburbs to coastal cities and their beaches. While enjoying some good relaxation and recreation, we should not forget that there is never a vacation from our vocation. St. Elizabeth of the Holy Trinity said it best, echoing St. Paul when she stated that she and humanity were created for the “praise of His glorious grace”(Ephesians 1:6) .
The beach is a fantastic place to encounter Christ and deepen our relationship with Jesus, through whom we are “called to a personal relationship with God” (CCC 299) . Walking on the beach in the cool of the evening, as is the tradition of my family, causes me to reflect on several passages of Sacred Scripture that lift my mind quickly to give Him the praise that is due His Name.
Here are a few that you might consider as you venture to the shores:
The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD, upon many waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful, the voice of the LORD is full of majesty. (Psalm 29: 3, 4)
Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty! Thy decrees are very sure; holiness befits thy house, O LORD, for evermore. (Psalm 99 4, 5)
If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there thy hand shall lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me…(Psalm 139: 9 ,10)
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress; He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad because they had quiet, and He brought them to their desired haven. (Psalm 107: 28-30)
He went out again beside the sea; and all the crowd gathered about Him, and He taught them. (Mark 2:13)
And He awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. (Mark 4:39)
Whether you want to reconnect with our Lord or even ask Him to still the turmoil of your heart, the shores have much to share with us about God’s love, mercy and power. May you find Him in the stillness of the night or the roaring of the sea. Regardless, He is there.
