They just might! At least, they are providing valuable funds for pregnant women who are in crisis, considering abortion, or desperately needing assistance during their pregnancy. Did you know that in Virginia, $15 of the $25 specialty plate fees to go to Pregnancy Center locations in Virginia that are 501(c)(3) entities. Does the money really go to help them? I am happy to report: It does indeed! The Arlington Diocese’s very own Gabriel Project received $1,554.55 a few weeks ago to help pregnant women who are choosing life. Gabriel Project is just one of many programs to receive a portion of the funds raised in Virginia from the sale of the Choose Life plates.
It was a wonderful idea, started by a Mr. Randy Harris, in 1996, not only to have a reminder of the gift of life as one drives around the nation, but to have the proceeds truly help the women and children who are in a vulnerable situation. With over 30 states able to have Choose Life plates, the proceeds are at almost $21 million. Yes, MILLION! In Virginia, 19,110 plates sold or renewed from July 1, 2009 through July 31, 2014 raised $330,450 for pregnancy centers. Take a look at the number of plates sold in your state – Congratulations Florida!

We are fast approaching January 22, the 42nd anniversary of the Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade which legalized abortion in the United States. Since that time, more than 50 million children have been killed. Each one of us knows we are missing family members and that our loved ones have made a decision to end the life of their child, a life-long wound that they now carry. We can all help abortion to end. There are countless ways, and sure, this is a small way to witness to life, and to provide funds to those in need. But it is a concrete way to be pro-life. Please take time to learn more about the Choose Life license plates initiative, and consider getting a plate today! It is an easy way to support life and to remind others (stuck behind you in northern Virginia traffic) that life is precious. And don’t forget to go to the March for Life on January 22! See you there!
