The Friday Five: Every Family Needs a Father

This week we recognize the irreplaceable role of  fatherhood, a vocation to which all men are called. Pope Francis reminds us: “It is a term dearer than any other to us Christians because it is the name by which Jesus taught us to call God: father.”

“Every family needs a father.” These are the words of Pope Francis in his 2-part Wednesday General Audience speaking on the danger of “absent” fathers and the value of a father’s role within the family.

In his Arlington Catholic Herald column, Soren Johnson relates the “inexorable passage of time that any father faces” to our  relationship with God the Father.

Scripture is littered with references of the Father’s Blessing (Genesis 49:1-28), warnings to fathers (Ephesians 6:4), and the responsibilities of children to their parents (Sirach 3:1-16).
