This week we join our diocesan family in celebrating Bishop Loverde’s upcoming 50th anniversary of priestly ordination, drawing particular attention to his role as an evangelist through traditional and new media. As Bishop Loverde has written, “Evangelization simply means sharing the Good News about a Person, Jesus Christ. It is you and I taking a step toward Jesus…and then toward others to introduce Him. In all times, all around the world, the Church has existed to evangelize, to proclaim Jesus Christ” (Go Forth with Hearts on Fire, 9-10).

“This is Bishop Paul Loverde of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington.”
Thousands of people commuting during rush hour in the DMV area hear this greeting from our shepherd on WTOP during the “Drive at 5” (Tuesdays and Thursdays).
Of these radio spots, Donald Cardinal Wuerl of our neighboring Archdiocese of Washington has shared this:
“I keep hearing on the radio those wonderful reflections [of yours] where your gentle voice comes on and reminds us that we’re all supposed to be behaving a lot better!
Bishop Loverde’s radio spots consist of uplifting messages that relate to secular and liturgical seasons, current events, and universal human experiences.
For Bishop Loverde, these radio spots are part of the Church’s evangelical mission, namely to introduce just one person to Jesus Christ.
As he has written in Go Forth with Hearts on Fire:
“We do not impose our beliefs on others. In fact, we propose the Good News. The best way to evangelize is to attract people to the God they so desperately need by the way we live our lives.”
The Office of Communications has received countless emails and letters from people thanking Bishop Loverde for his radio spots. We have testimonials of people returning to the Church after 40 years away from the sacraments!
We are so grateful that our shepherd’s gentle, loving voice, reaches his flock and thousands of others living in the region. If you haven’t heard him yet, find a sample of his spots here, and be sure to tune in to WTOP.
